The earth does more than provide raw materials for human consumption. It also performs a host of services for people and business. These are known as ecosystem services. Well-managed forests, functioning river floodplains, and healthy farmland and wetlands provide vital services across the economy.
Ecosystem services are often divided into four broad categories: provisioning, such as the production of food and water; regulating, such as the control of climate and disease; supporting, such as nutrient cycles and crop pollination; and cultural, such as spiritual and recreational benefits.
