Undermount Cutouts and Reinforcement
The Hole Is the Hard Part
Everything else on a countertop is a surface. The sink cutout is a structure. Once you remove that rectangle of stone you are left with a front rail and a back rail, and the front rail spans an open cabinet with nothing under it, carries the weight of a bowl full of water, and gets leaned on daily.
We fabricate that part on the bench, at the shop, before the top is ever loaded onto the truck. None of it can be added later.
Templated to Your Actual Bowl
Sink manufacturers publish cutout templates, and they are a starting point rather than a specification. Bowls vary between production runs, mounting flange widths differ, and a reveal that looks generous on paper can leave the stone overhanging the bowl rim by a hair on one corner.
So we want the sink itself, in the shop, before we cut. We set the reveal deliberately: a positive reveal where the stone sits slightly proud of the bowl is easiest to wipe into, a zero reveal looks tidiest and is least forgiving of any error, and a negative reveal is a crumb trap. Most Riverside kitchens we do end up with a small positive reveal on all four sides.
Radiused Corners, Every Time
A square inside corner is a stress riser. All the load in the slab funnels into one point and, given a few years of ordinary use, that point cracks. The fix is old and simple: cut the corner as a radius so the stress travels around the curve.
We follow the radius with polishing. A raw saw cut leaves a rough edge with micro fractures in it, and those are exactly the flaws that propagate. A polished radius is the cheapest crack prevention available on a stone top and it takes minutes.
What we check before the cut:
- The finished width of the front rail, measured, not estimated.
- Whether a faucet or air gap hole lands close enough to the cutout to weaken the rail further.
- Where the nearest seam falls, because a seam near a cutout corner is a compound weak point.
- Whether the cabinet below is a standard sink base or has been modified for a farmhouse bowl.
Rodding the Narrow Rail
When the front rail comes out under roughly four inches, we rod it. A slot is cut along the underside of the rail, a steel rod is bedded in it with epoxy, and the epoxy is left to cure before the top moves. The rod stiffens the rail against flexing, which is what fatigues stone.
Rodding is not a substitute for support underneath and we do not sell it as one. It buys stiffness in a section that is inherently slender. Where a cutout is very large, or the sink is cast iron, we add a plywood deck or a steel plate across the cabinet as well so the bowl weight goes into the cabinet frame.
Anchors, Not Adhesive Alone
An undermount bowl bonded to the stone with silicone and nothing else will let go. Not on day one, usually not in year one, but the joint is carrying live load through repeated wetting and heating and it eventually creeps.
We set mechanical anchors into the underside of the slab and clip the bowl up to them. The clips carry the weight. The sealant does what sealant is for, which is keeping water out of the joint between stone and steel. When we get called to a dropped sink, adhesive only mounting is what we find nearly every time.
The Bench Sequence
- Sink measured in the shop against the published template.
- Cutout marked with the chosen reveal and the corner radii set out.
- Cut made oversize on the waste side, then dressed back to the line.
- Corners radiused, edge polished to match the top surface.
- Front rail measured; if it is narrow, slotted and rodded, then left to cure.
- Anchor positions drilled and set.
- Bowl dry fitted, reveal checked on all four sides, then removed for transport.
